Redhorse is the collaboration between writer Matt Stansberry and artist David Wilson to document the wildlife of the Lake Erie region through a high production print periodical. The goal has always been to bring together the disciplines of conservation biology, poetry, visual arts and journalism into a single unified project. This journal is the output of that work.
The quote below gets at why we do it:
“Some of my poems have been motivated by my desire to honor a particular creature or plant or aspect of the natural world with words, my way of acknowledging my respect and appreciation for the beauty or courage, the faith or fearlessness, the devotion to life, the tenacity inherent to the living, nonhuman world, to capture and keep a moment by constructing its portrait in words. In such poems, I want to depict as accurately as I can, in as much detail as I can and in the most evocative language possible, the integrity of whatever very specific entity I’m addressing.”
Belt Magazine, Great Lakes Review, Hawkmoth and Floodplains have published content that is collected and republished under the Redhorse brand. Thank you to these great publications, and thank you for reading.
